GM Off-Lease, Rental and Company Vehicle returns now being offered to public

Published Jan. 2016

GM launched an exciting new program yesterday available in the U.S. designed to make thousands of Off-Lease, returned GM Company Car and Rental vehicles available to consumers before they go to auction. The first-of-its-kind Factory Pre-Owned Collection program was introduced by GM CEO Mary Barra at an investor meeting.

Historically, these vehicles have all gone through auctions where they are purchased by dealers who, in turn, market and sell them to consumers. With the new Factory Pre-Owned Collection, the vehicles will be available to consumers while they are concurrently being offered on the wholesale market online to dealers through GMF DealerSource. A vehicle will remain on the Factory Pre-Owned Collection inventory site for 28 days. If it is not purchased, it then goes to a physical auction.

When a vehicle is returned, it is first offered exclusively to GM dealers on GMF DealerSource for two to four days. If the vehicle is not purchased by a dealer, it is added to the Factory Pre-Owned Collection inventory for consumers. Shoppers will find detailed photos of the car, truck or SUV, a CarFax vehicle history report and a Kelley Blue Book Price Advisor. Shoppers choose a participating dealership from which to take delivery and are then guided through the Shop-Click-Drive experience. The selected dealership works with the consumer to make arrangements for purchase and delivery and arranges to have the vehicle transported to the dealership. The dealer then completes an inspection, prepares the necessary paperwork and delivers the vehicle.

"We know that many of our customers who are shopping for a used car want to complete more of the process online, and that number is growing," Barra said in a news release. "GM is already a leader in online new-car shopping with our Shop-Click-Drive service, and we are expanding it with the Factory Pre-Owned Collection, making GM the first automaker to offer this choice to consumers."

The Factory Pre-Owned Collection offers significant benefits to customers:

  • Visibility to nationwide inventory
  • Factory bumper-to-bumper limited warranty coverage
  • Balance of powertrain warranty (from original in-service date)
  • 3-month trials of OnStar® & SiriusXM®
  • Roadside assistance & courtesy transportation
  • 3-day/150-mile vehicle exchange program
  • Scheduled maintenance plan for Chevrolet, Buick & GMC
  • Support of nationwide dealer network

Benefits to the dealer include incremental leads and sales; ancillary profit opportunities; no floorplan or advertising costs; and waived GMF DealerSource buy fees.

U.S. dealers must meet certain criteria to qualify to participate in the Factory Pre-Owned Collection program. They must be located in the contiguous 48 states in the U.S.; be enrolled in Shop-Click-Drive; participate in the GM Digital Marketing Package Performance Solution; and be registered as a GMF DealerSource dealer.

The program will be live and available for consumers beginning Feb. 1.
